It's a holiday weekend and you are going to the lake with your family. You should be looking forward to it, but you drew the "short" straw and are going to have to stay in the same cabin as your cousin Matthew. Matthew's wife is so difficult to be around, every opinion she has seems out in leftfield and she refuses to listen to facts no matter how strongly they are supported. You are beginning to wonder if perhaps she has less than average intelligence- fact or fallacy? Fallacy, most research shows just the opposite, the higher someone scores on an IQ test the more likely they are to fall for stereotypes because that they can recognize patterns faster. Two biases based in psychology might be working together to cause Matthew's wife to be difficult to view outside evidence. First, the conformation bias, which only allows her to see what she expects to see. Partnered with the desirability bias, seeing only what she wants to see, you might be swimming in circles trying to get her to objectively review new evidence. Enjoy your weekend and please remember to honor those who gave all for our freedom! See you next week for F4 post, Thank you for your support, Dr. Misty Ladd, CPP, PCI, PSP
